Asha Auntie on Keeping Your Brain Fit

Brain training exercises—including puzzles and memory tasks—have lasting positive effects. There’s no doubt that intellectual engagement benefits your brain and your overall well-being.

Although there’s an app for just about anything, there are many ways to exercise your brain that don’t involve technology. This includes playing board games, knitting, gardening, learning new skills and teaching skills to others, and volunteering.

Here at Priya Living, many of these activities are part of our regular programming. We love our communal garden, cooking nights, game nights, excursions, book clubs and workshops. These activities help keep our minds active and our hearts full!

Active Adult Games and Hobbies to Keep Your Mind Sharp

Here are some of our favorite low-tech ways to keep our minds healthy while having fun:

Antakshari

This lively game from the sub-continent combines our love of music and Bollywood trivia with tons of singing! It’s a fun and engaging way to improve your memory … and maybe even your pitch.

Chess

Chess (or chatrang in India) is another favorite here at Priya. As a game of strategy, it boosts brain health by improving concentration and increasing focus —requiring you to plan ahead and think outside the box.

Sewing, Knitting, and Arts & Crafts

Using your hands to make things is a great way to develop mental and physical dexterity! These activities challenge you to come up with unique, intricate, and imaginative designs while improving your hand-eye coordination.

Cooking

We love our communal setup here at Priya Living. There are so many benefits to co-living, but one of the biggest perks is learning about our neighbors’ cultures through their delicious food! Preparing meals and enjoying them with friends is another great way to keep both our minds and hands active. Innovation isn’t just about new technologies—it’s about looking at something in a whole new way!
