How to Stay Active This Winter
Asha Auntie’s Indoor Fitness Tips For All Seasons
As the temperature drops, the idea of going for my evening stroll around the neighborhood doesn’t sound as appealing as it did a month or so ago. Yes, even here in Fremont, California!
While I won’t deny that we have it much easier than our friends over on the East Coast, the colder weather does sometimes put a damper on my exercise plans.
We all know that physical activity is an important part of maintaining good health. Getting that exercise in while being outside in the fresh air definitely makes it more enjoyable and, dare I say, something to look forward to!
Staying Active Is Crucial for Older Adults
Since I’ve moved here to Priya Living, exercise has become especially fun. I love puttering around in our communal garden or hitting a hiking trail with my walking club. Studies show that staying physically active and engaging in some form of exercise all year round is crucial for maintaining mental and physical well-being – especially as we age.
So here are some of my tips for how to stay active during winter:
- Join A Class
Many forms of exercise can be done indoors. Here at Priya Living, we’re fortunate enough to have plenty of yoga and dance classes on offer as part of our programming. Use the wintertime to switch up your routine and try something new! How about a Bollywood dance class, Zumba, or some gentle Pilates? - Mall Walking
Walking is an excellent form of exercise that you can do anywhere. While I prefer being outside because of the wonderful sights, sounds, and smells, indoor walking sessions don’t just have to be limited to the treadmill. Over on the East Coast, my cousin Sunny’s walking group often gets together to walk around the mall. I honestly don’t know why I didn’t think of this one myself! - Indoor Pools
Swimming is another great form of exercise, especially if you have joint pain. Priya Living is conveniently located near a community center with an indoor pool, and many of our neighbors use it year round to stay fit. Besides swimming laps, aqua fit classes are a great way to get both endurance and strength training while having fun. - Home Workouts
While we have many amenities here at Priya, including the exercise rooms where our weekly classes are held, YouTube videos are a great resource for home exercises – especially yoga, tai chi, and gentle stretching. I always search for videos that are tailored to older adults with lower mobility and I check with my doctor before jumping in. The great thing about home workouts is that you don’t need a lot of space or equipment to get started – and can do them in the comfort of your warm, cozy house!
Happy exercising!
